Don’t worry, its not your fault you got drunk and smashed in someone’s windows

Oh no dear, its all the fault of those nasty supermarkets for selling you booze too cheaply.

At least that’s the message emerging from LibDem HQ, and its the same message coming from government and the Tory party.

Whatever happened to taking responsibility for your actions?

A simple remedy would be to ensure that the criminal pays back their victim for the damage caused. This is easily achievable in simple crimes, crimes against the person are more tricky, you can’t undo a murder or a rape, but you can bring some form of non-violent retribution to bear on the situation.

Even more effective would be to extend this to the insurance system. If you are a victim of theft and the insurance company pays out, then the criminal (whether known or not) becomes a debtor of the insurance company for that amount. The company should then be allowed to investigate to reclaim the debt if they wish (through non-violent means of course).

The down side of this is it would free up more time for the state to prosecute non-crimes like drug use, building a new porch without permission or reading out the names of the dead in a public place…
