Now the dust has settled

A few things about Obama and his presidency…

His funding came from the same places Bush got his funding, the same places Clinton got his. These interests will want a return on their investment. Obama, and the Democrats will oblige. There is not going to be any real change, just a few changes around the edges. Some of those changes are to be welcomed of course, some will be troubling, but none will be deep or radical (and few, if any, will help the poor black communities who voted for him).

The cult of personality around him is deeply disturbing, personality cults in politics seldom work out well and they give way too much leeway to the politicians concerned. He will probably take advantage of this to grab more power to the federal government.

Finally, we are already seeing disturbing nationalist, authoritarian schemes emerging. He is talking about bribing people to do community service (he was talking about requiring them to do it). His talk of people serving the nation and organising ‘Corps’ to do it would have some conservatives in raptures were they not still in shock at a black man becoming president (see here)

Obama, and the Democratic Party are not liberals. They are nationalists and statists. They may be better than the Republicans, they may sound caring, but they are not liberals. They have little to no concern for personal freedom and their entire practice of government will be built around state direction and managerialism.

Please don’t get too carried away. Breath a sigh of relief that McCain and Palin won’t be in the White House (and that Clinton won’t be) and the Republicans have been punished for their dire policies, but Obama is not the saviour, he is another statist politician.
