Rushdie does the right thing
From Index On Censorship
Salman Rushdie has done the right thing with his libel case. Rather than going for massive damages, he’s just asked that the false statements about him be admitted as false by the accused and the offending writing be removed from new editions of the book.
This is surely the best way to go about this in our broken libel system. It preserves Rushdie’s reputation against the libel and puts the falsity of the accusation on the official record and damages the reputation of the libeler, other claims in his book will now be considered suspect.
So congratulations to Salman Rushdie for resisting using the law as a tool for personal gain and instead settling for justice and truth.
