Andy Burnham admits spying on ‘dissidents’?
There’s been a bit of fuss over something Andy Burnham (formerly Minister in charge of population surveillance) said in Progress magazine:
‘To people who get seduced by Tory talk of how liberal they are, I find something very curious in the man who was, and still is I believe, an exponent of capital punishment having late-night, hand-wringing, heart-melting phone calls with Shami Chakrabarti.’
Strangely the fuss has been over the vague hint of some sort of romantic connection, I am with SpyBlog on this though, the more worrying implication is that the government is spying on David Davis or Shami Chakrabati.
Their only crime seems to be one of being opponents of this government’s increasingly authoritarian population control measures, like ID card and detention without trial.
Of course, its not surprising that this is happening. The mantra of ‘national security’ trumps all in the minds of this government and its mandarins, anyone who is a prominent critic of their ill thought out proposals for so-called national security is bound to come under suspicion for undermining the government.
Given that we already have sedition laws and democracies have often implemented them, I wonder how long until more are implemented here in a fit of nationalistic ‘patriotism’.
