Does the calling of this by-election reflect the incompatibility of democracy and libertarianism?

If DD is the libertarian who has bounced his party into a strategy and a policy position at odds with the membership of his party does this make KMK the defender of our democracy in preventing a meaningless walkover?

Personally I'd never expect the Labout Party to protect civil liberties. Their whole agenda has always been state control over people's lives.

Of course, there have been plenty of individuals in the Labour Party who have fought encroachments upon liberty in some areas, just as Tories have in others, but I don't know of any who have been consistent (DD on drugs, immigration and sexuality for example, or Labour members who supported closed shops or the command economy).

I agree with everything you have said. I am not used to supporting any Conservative opinions, but I very much admire and respect the stand he has made. What has happened to the Labour Party, who one would expect to have been protecting our civil liberties?
