Great misconceptions of our time:

  • We have free trade - blatant nonsense. Even within the EU trade isn’t that free - I cannot bring in cigarettes and sell them?
  • We have free markets in foo - I no of no area we have entirely free markets. True, in some areas we have freer markets - food supply is freer than broadcasting for example. Too often however I hear that we’ve tried free markets and they don’t work.
  • The US health system is a free market system - it is not. There is much government intervention, both in allowing treatments and in messing around with the tax status of insurance and costs and more

I’m sure there’s more, but those just came to mind. Too many criticisms of ‘free markets’ or ‘free trade’ rest upon these false premises. It is possible that a totally free market may not be desirable, but the current situation is far from free market.
