No conference for me…
I’m not going to make conference this year, but to make up for that I seem to be blogging almost hyper-actively. A blessing perhaps since that my blog posts are easier to ignore than me rabbiting on at you in person ;)
I have been watching some of the conference though and rather enjoyed Steve Webb’s bit on the manifesto and possible upcoming election. He said many good things, but I kept on feeling that LibDem policy doesn’t always reflect the ideals he stated.
I still haven’t shaken my skepticism over the social justice and ‘fairness’ agenda - it is used as a code word for meddling and authoritarianism.
I was disappointed by the man who said we should be ‘left wing’ in ‘the traditional sense’ and explicitly redistribute income. Firstly, I claim a prior tradition for left wing which means equality before the law, the small state, freedom of the individual, distribution of power and removing inbuilt privilege. Explicit redistribution is not the way to do that, it just creates another privileged class who view themselves as the deserved recipient of tax payer’s largess…
