Drugs and sport

With yet another drugs scandal hitting the world of cycling and Barry Bonds is set to break the all-time home run record performance enhancing drugs in sports is back on the agenda.

Being very liberal on drugs issues I have no problem with drugs in sport. If a player wishes to take them he may as far as I’m concerned.

The if, and it is a big if, is whether the rules of the competition allow such drugs. In most (if not all) competitions, the organisers do not allow them, so if you take them you are breaking the contract you entered into to allow to perform. As such the organisers are well within their rights to ban you.

Of course, if someone were to set up a competition, say a rival to the Tour de France, which allowed drugs then they should be allowed to. Those who try to cheat in the drug free one could be banned from that for life yet still be able to compete. Those who prefer to push their body to the limits using more traditional methods then compete on a level footing with others who prefer that.
