They are a self-selected group who want power. They are usually from a privileged elite (especially in the Labour Party) and most seem to be lawyers. Politics is now a career. Your description predicates a certain level of exclusivity between the political class and wider populace - surely they are in truth one and the same, simultaneously the whole and of the whole. The false vocabulary of 'us&them' accepts the denial of the decicive role played by active participation in democracy, ultimately denying the democratic voice itself. WE will continue to be plagued by the same old faces until and unless more people stand up to place a coherent and concerted challenge, and while WE continue WE will deserve everything in which WE acquiesce. The weakness of democracy is it's dependance on complete education; Brown's weakness is his anti-democratic nature, which admits the (wilfull) failure of society to educate adequately and suggests an intellectual insecurity on his own behalf.
