Brown Meme

James at Quaequamblog tagged me with this.

Two things Gordo should be proud of:
1) Independence of the Bank of England - taking decisions out of the political sphere, a rare case of a Labour politician giving up power.
2) Following Tory spending plans and building upon the decent economy they left us with (although this is tinged by his more recent handling of the economy)

Two things he should be ashamed of:
1) Going along with and funding this government’s worst excesses - Iraq and ID Cards
2) Rebranding state spending as ‘investment’ a word game which makes it more difficult to argue against massive ‘public’ spending and more taxation to fund it.
As there’s so much he should be ashamed of, here’s a third: Tax credits and the wider micromanagement of the economy and people’s lives through the tax and benefits system - its an insidious technique which amounts to state control through the back door.
Oh, go on, a fourth (the last one I promise): Increasing the number of people dependent upon the state for their income drastically. This cannot be good for the economy or society. It means it will be in the interests of ever more people to highly tax the productive private sector to fund the state sector and benefits regime which makes private enterprise less attractive (reducing income leading to a vicious spiral of tax raises)

The following is probably firmly set in cloud cuckoo land - I don’t expect him to do any of this:

Two things he should do immediately upon taking office:
1) Scrap ID cards and the National Identity Register.
2) Start on a major review of our laws and scrapping the great majority of laws and regulations.

Two things he should do whilst PM (apart from see the above through):
1) Finish the reform of the House of Lords making it 100% elected with a PR system.
2) Devolve power and tax raising to local authorities and reforming local government and the areas it controls to make it more accountable - probably involving reducing the sizes of some authorities - like the London Boroughs.

I assume most people have been tagged, or have seen this, so I won’t bother tagging anyone. If you havn’t been tagged then consider this a tagging ;)

  1. I don’t think that reform of the House of Lords should be made Finnish. The thought of boiled fish and reindeer served at every meal in the members’ lounge appalls me.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist. :)
