It seems we picked the wrong day to arrive in Chicago…
The Brood XIII of cicadas is due to emerge the night of the 21st morning of the 22nd in Northern Illinois and Indiana.
With a bit of luck they won’t reach as far south as the wedding though.
There will be lots of them. Lots and lots of them.
They’re fascinating bugs. This species emerges from underground once every 17 years and each brood is on a different cycle. When they emerge there’s millions of them. That said, they’re still bugs, with big red eyes.
They’re also edible, I don’t think they’ll be on the menu at the reception though…
