Liberal Music

Since the right wing blogs are getting all excited about finding right wing music (and Iain Dale shows us the the Tories are still as jingoistic as ever) I’ve decided to look for liberal music.

I must say there’s a lot. A hell of a lot.

Liberals can claim all the music which is created by individuals, on their own or coming together voluntarily, who make music because that’s what they want to do.
Whether it is the music of Hildegard von Bingen, Throbbing Gristle, John Coltrane or Scissor Sisters.

Being liberal music of course means there’s no style or content which is forbidden and no prescription on what is to be liked or not.

In fact, I’m struggling to think of specific examples which could not be called liberal music. I presume theirs state sponsored music from totalitarian states where the music must espouse some ideal or be banned. Even then there is probably some state sponsored music in which people are given some leeway in what they play, so even if its not completely liberal, its at least partly so.

Of course, being liberal music, its open to individual interpretation, so if the right, or left, or dancing hamsters want to call it their own, we will share.

  1. Well, obviously, there is The Land, which even if you don’t agree with the sentiments (and most Lib Dems, in fact, don’t), it’s a cracker of a tune.
